Ok, this was a bit of detective work and I will explain my reasoning step by step so please stay with me. My theory has some gaps and I will point them out but my line of thinking has enough evidence to let the community in on it and ask for help. This Thread is a WIP and I will add proof and screenshots to this over time. So far you have to take my word that everything in here is truthful and has been checked multiple times by me. And yeah, sorry for my English. ;) The basic question I am trying to get solved is: Why did the thargoids enter the bubble? Step 1: Scratching the surface. While taking part in the defence of the systems that were attacked I noticed that there were some clues on why the thargoids made their way into the bubble. Some logs of attacked megaships gave away that interceptors only attacked after they found something in the cargo holds of those ships. At the same time we have the communications between NPC ships in NHSS that indicate that they have something in their cargo. This part is well-known and probably nothing new for you. Of course scanning the NPCs and the megaships gave no conclusive results. There were some unconfirmed sightings of thargoid probes and sensors in NPC ships and some confirmed findings of Sensors and Probes in megaships. Thargoid Sensor [AMAETHON CLASS AGRICULTURAL VESSEL HDO-638] (Lwalama / AB4) Thargoid Probe [SAMSON CLASS BULK CARGO SHIP RUF-707] (Lalande 4141 / Nahtanoj) Some would stop here and take that as enough proof that someone stole thargoid stuff, and they are just trying to get it back. But if these things are still in the cargo, why didn't the thargoids take it? I have seen Medusas at those wrecks and the just left after scanning the ships. Besides that we were transporting these things into the bubble for a long time now and it does not make sense that this would trigger the thargoids all of a sudden. At this point the leads split into two lines that will meet again later on. Of course scans can't tell us much about something that is not there any more, so we have to work with what we do have. This leads to two new questions: What do the contents of the cargo holds on those megaships tell us? What does the damage on the megaships tell us? Step 2: What do the contents of the cargo holds on those megaships tell us? The idea behind the first question is that the commodities in the cargo bays of the megaships might tell us where the ships came from or where they were going to. If the thargoids did not get all the ships then some might have reached their destination and whatever they were transporting is now there. I scanned a few wrecks in the systems that were under attack and found this: [DYNOSIUS CLASS AGRICULTURAL VESSEL KTB-2673] (Argestes / A2) Tea, Synthetic Meat, Animal Monitors, Animal Meat, Grain, Crop Harvesters, Fruit and Vegetables [SAGAN CLASS TOURIST SHIP CUR-6466] (Flech 2) Consumer Technology, Wine, Synthetic Fabrics [SAMSON CLASS BULK CARGO SHIP RUF-707] (Lalande 4141 / Nahtanoj) Tantalum, Titanium, Silver, Gallium, Lithium, Beryllium, Geological Equipment, Power Generators, Mineral Extractors, Energy Grid Assembly, Building Fabricators, Semiconductors, Superconductors, Micro-Weave Cooling Hoses [AMAETHON CLASS AGRICULTURAL VESSEL HDO-638] (Lwalama / AB4) Agri-Medicines, Water Purifiers, Coffee, Beer, Tea, Animal Monitors, Synthetic Meat, Grain, Crop Harvesters, Fruit and Vegetables, Fish, Marine Equipment This list is just a sample and if you can add to this then please do. I stopped to follow this lead because i could not figure out how to use EDDB or similar third party sources to help me with this. In the end we would need to find Starports or Systems that would buy or sell all or most of these commodities. This part is a bit weak, but keep it in mind. It will come up again later on. Step 3: What does the damage on the megaships tell us? Looking at the cargo containers on the damaged megaships we can see that a lot of them have thargoid goo all over them but only 3 types are broken up and burning. These containers belong to 3 different corporations: Caine Massey, Brewer Corporation and Manticore. What do we know about these corporations? Caine Massey is a mining MegaCorp that is advertising everywhere. Not much else is known and so far I could not find out where their base of operations is. Brewer Corporation seems to be into material trading, too. What they are most known for is their early expansion into the Plaeidas Sector with multiple community goals. All their CGs gave Neville Horizons Starport in the Kaushpoos System as their base of operation. Manticore is the most interesting so far. There is a minor faction called "Manticore Munitions" in the Cegreeth system. It is an imperial corporation. For the most part they produce Multicannons and Cannons but also mining and hatch breaker limpets. Step 4: Conclusion Ok lets work these backwards. We have three corporations that are associated with mining or material trading. Their containers are the only ones that get attacked by the thargoids. I am making a bold step here and make a big assumption about what we might be looking for: Barnacles in the bubble. Meta alloys have become an important part of our economy. Since the Plaeidas has become a much more hostile region, it would make sense for those corporations to copy or steal the technology that produces the meta alloy. At the same time it would explain the thargoids offensive. If their relation to the barnacles is anything like that of earth based ants towards lice, then stealing them would trigger such a strong reaction. It could still be something else but this is my working hypothesis at the moment. For two of those corporations we have Systems that might be their Base of operations. Kaushpoos for Brewer and Cegreeth for Manticore. Kaushpoos has an Ammonia gas giant but no bodies that you would usually find barnacles on. Cegreeth has an Ammonia world and 6 bodies that would qualify for barnacle growth. Three of those are tied up in a gravitational system with the ammonia world. Thargoids came close to both systems: In week 6 thargoids attacked Kunuvi, which is 55 ly away from Kaushpoos. We lost that system. Maybe that means that they got all the megaships. They seem to have lost interest in that region since then. In week 11 thargoids attacked Lwalama, which is 49 ly away from Cegreeth, but we won that round. Maybe a Megaship came through. Starports in both systems buy a lot of the commodities that can be found in the cargo bays of destroyed megaships. That's it. Over all the case for Kaushpoon is very weak and much stronger for Cagreeth. To proof that I am right with my conclusions we would need to find barnacles in Cegreeth that were stolen and planted there by Manticore. Even if I am wrong, I think the logic behind my hypothesis is strong enough to open it up to the public. There are some gaps that need to be filled, like cargo scans of megaships or maybe someone else has an idea for where to find the HQ for Caine Massey. More data might shift the conclusion but for now that's all I got. If you think I am onto something then please add to this and if you think this is then pls shoot some more holes into my hypothesis. ;)
