...when they turn up. It occurs to me that in some respects this is a 'golden' time in exploration (stop spluttering at the back), in that we're able to go (reasonably) safely out to the farthest reaches of the Galaxy in our unshielded, unarmed ships and not worry about getting into a fight. We're kind of the Kon-Tikis of the Elite Universe right now... paper-thin hulls, no defence, no weaponry - basically at the mercy of the whims of the Galaxy. All this for the sake of maximum jump range and speed across the stars. We've optimised our ships for one purpose. I know there are people who do multi-role their ships when exploring, but the majority of advice given and followed is the above. So when the first of us, and I genuinely think it's going to be an explorer first, meets the Thargoids and inevitably gets their ship shot at / destroyed; what happens? We're going to have to completely change our approach to exploring and essentially go out there armed which will hit the jump range and characteristics of our ships. It's also going to change which is the 'best' ship. I'm in a stripped down Anaconda which I can just afford and I'm only doing so because I want great screen shots (and because it I like the huge jump range); but there is no way I could run this ship if I need to arm it. I'm now looking straight back at the Asp and *I* think it suddenly becomes the only choice of explorer that makes sense in the Galaxy that contains a genuine armed threat. I think we're looking at a step change in the whole exploration dynamic whether it's intentional or not and this time of somewhat carefree exploration is coming to an end. We'll be saying "yeah, I remember exploration when were getting 40LY jumps in unarmed ships, you can't GET to the outer rim now; it's just too dangerous."
