"With the Pythons maneuverability and weight being a major point of critique on the original ship, Engineers at Faulcon DeLacy decided to give the re-designing a go an tried to come up with a version that retains the core functionality of the python while reducing hull mass and overall sluggishness of this very popular ship among elite bounty hunters, traders and explorers. The outcome was a lighter, faster and especially more maneuverable heavy scout that made cuts on overall integrity, firepower and module flexibility. While somehow still being a multi-purpose ship, the light Python lost some of its possible cargo capacity, optional size and heavy-weapon flexibility in favor of a sleeker hull design and additional maneuvering thrusters. Being lighter, faster and also more explorer-friendly, using heavy equipment would still take its toll on the newly gained swiftness of this classic design that survived the centuries." This is a thing that I spent a lot of time thinking about: How could you make the Python any better? You can't. However, making an alternative version that somehow changes some of the design-priorities we could fill the gap of the not-yet-implemented heavy multipurpose with focus on combat-scout/explorer ship. Core internals stay the same! The most important thing was to retain the pythons flexibility, with more speed and jump-range being the priorities. Weapon hardpoints: 5xM 1xL With two L hardpoints less, the light python loses a lot of compatibility with some good powerplay-weaponry such as the APA and the Pacifier and packs a lot less of a punch versus heavy ships due to the M hardpoints lower armor penetration and damage. This might bring it in a position where it will have to use more static weaponry such as railguns or PAs, so a pilot has to make the best out of the additional maneuverability. The lower L hardpoint stays, 2 M hardpoints in the place of the former upper L hardpoints and a fifth M hardpoint on the upper side of cockpit where the two utility mounts would be on the normal model. Hull stats: The appeareance of the light Python retains a similar look to the original, with two large chunks on the sides behind the chockpit being cut out. The hull is 30% lighter than the Python (225t) but also 40% less durable due to the use of lighter alloys and the previously mentioned cuts. As you see, it's almost the same size, so good flying is even more of a must now, as it stays quite a big target if someone manages to get below or above it. EDIT: Further calcs necessary, the ship would have uber jump range with that mass level, jump range should not superceed 60 LY when stripped. Utility mounts: 4x utility and 1x reserved for a scanner, no big changes here, the utility behind the cockpit is now placed further back on the ship. Optional Internal: Two of the three size 6 compartments are downgraded to size 5, one of the size three ones is downgraded to size one. Hull-tanking is still possible to a point, but no more size 6 SCBs if you want strong base-shields and a dramatic loss in cargo space and limpet capacity are the toll of the reduced space and mass. Overall shields would now have to be stronger due to lower hull mass, the light Python boasts a 10% increase on its shield profile to better protect the hull. Maneuverability is quite a bit higher than on the usual python, it also doesn't stall as easy anymore, however stalling in a strong turn has not been completely eliminated, just heavily reduced. A pilot would have to make use of the increased maneuverability to compensate for less firepower and a rather weak hull. Summing it up, we have less firepower and L-point flexibility together with a cut in optionals for more speed, maneuverability and jump-range. What do you guys think?
