In current ED all game play elements are first-person focused, which is great. Immersion is great (it would be perfect with space-legs, but still...). Bear with me for this proposal as English is not my native language. I play ED from the first beta back in 2014 - sorry 3299 - and achieved triple elite, Admiral and King. And there is still a lot of game-play for me to enjoy. However, from time to time I wish I could do some other - more passive - activities in the world of Elite. Here is my proposal for this new game play: The basic idea is that some parts of the background simulation (BGS) could be given into the hand of the players and enjoy new game play while doing so. It can also be seen as an step towards space-legs. Once we have space-legs the players have these roles/locations as go-to places. Bar Manager. Being the lowest level in the new food-chain the bar manager will operate a bar where pilots, station workers etc. will ask for food, drinks, accommodation and maybe goods from the black market. The bar manager must aim to keep his/her customers happy without running into the risk of getting caught by police forces for selling illegal drugs or black market goods. Informations are being exchanged/sold as well, based on today's intel-packages. The back drop would be a large room in the likes of "Ten forward" of Star Trek. With the view just above the mail slot of the rotating station or towards the landing pads of a ground based station. The player can adjust the name of the bar. The local prices and visuals, background music style, etc. Depending on the station and its surroundings (security level) the customers are ranging from the poor, pirates to average and upper class NPCs or players. A variant may include restaurant manager, hotel manager etc. He/she must manage a number of suites which can be bought like passenger cabins. The demand, quality and services can control the price the NPCs are willing to pay. Special local events (boom, famine, etc.) may alter demand, too. GC nearby, price will raise. War next door, price will drop. Mission Giver. Today we can only accept missions. There is a huge world of game-play on the other side of the mission-giver's desk. More of a tactical game-play with little to none first-person action. In office with a window presenting a view to either the inside or outside of a (space) station, you will be presented with options to create missions in order to accomplish multiple goals: Make money by selling the goods the mission takers are delivering to you. Fill the local market with goods created on the planet nearby depending on its properties/resources. Basically steering the production towards goods that are needed / payed well (see mining manager). Influence the BGS in favor of your faction. This implies that either you are part of a faction or act as an independent mission giver. A mechanism for player factions to assign/remove commanders to their faction (or vice versa) is required (maybe via player groups). Of cause the money / materials / cargo given to the mission takers have to be deducted from a bucked (your wallet, faction-depot for materials and cargo etc.) Traffic Controller. Currently there is a good chance to collide in with other ships upon launch in a very busy station. The NPC traffic controllers often give you the "all clear" but it is actually a unsafe release. Similar to the mission giver the round office next to the mail slot would be available to you and your job would be to: Release ships in a given time frame after their launch request. If they collide with others you get a malus. Manage the docking queue and prioritize urgent requests (1% hull, medical emergencies, VIPs etc.) Select the various audio responses (or talk yourself). Initiate counter measures when the station is being attacked. Send out local security service fighters. Earn money by making the right choices. Having fun when all goes well. Getting fined yourself when a ship has to wait for too long etc. Passenger Manager. Once you have a fleet of Dolphins, Orcas and Belugas you may want to create your own passenger service and hire NPCs as pilots transporting passengers from A to B and back again. You may need to hand out missions to have NPCs or players to protect your fleet. Your job is to: Pick and create the most profitable routes. Get the best pilots for the job. Pay them enough to stay. Get a good reputation for passengers to favor your service above others. Maintain your ships. Cargo Manager. Similar to the passenger manager one could think of a cargo delivery service from the given planet station to the space station using shuttles. Maybe both roles can be combined to one. Commodities Market manager. This role would give the faction in control of a station the chance to control the prices each good sold on its market. By lowering or raising prices the market manager can control the market and how "attractive" this market is to players and NPCs alike. The price of each good should consist of the production costs plus the adjustable uplift. The market manager will get a share of the turn-over on a weekly basis. Prices can only be changed in e.g. 6 hour intervals. Passive Miner. We already see a lot of smaller and larger sites with drilling machines extracting materials from planets. There is a potential for new game-play as the player could: pick a site where to dig. invest in the machines of different sizes and specialized material types. build/invest in a store for extracted materials/elements. Like ground based cargo racks. deliver the materials to sell them (occasionally) or sell them directly. This could be combined with cargo delivery and mission giver roles above. An interface between those roles would be helpful. New Ranking The mission giver, traffic controller, passenger and cargo manager roles can be used as a new step ladder towards a new "Elite" level (yes rank grinding). This could scale up in the future to the level of a station manager, system manager etc. controlling the fees for landing, share on cargo/passenger turn-over etc. The Other Side The above manager roles are basically the Federation types of roles There should be analogs in the flavor for the Empire and Alliance by choosing other job titles and incentives / guidelines. In addition to those "by the rule" kind of jobs, there should be a set of dark side equivalents. Pirates, Mob, organized crime players would choose their path to becoming The Boss by: Organize smuggle missions, illegal/black marked trading, people trafficking etc. Hand out missions to assassinate any enemies, e.g. bounty hunters which interrupt their business; competition; local security forces; ATRs Ignite war in nearby systems by influence of faction dynamics. Manage black markets by controlling the prices. Bribing of law abiding fed/imp/alliance managers or the competition in order to influence market prices, etc. What do other pilots think about this new roles?
