"There is None but Us." Since the dawn of our species, humankind has always looked toward the stars. Even as we crawled to our feet for the first time, taught ourselves to hide from prey, hunt, gather and eat, our eyes have been fixed upon skies. For countless centuries our hearts have yearned for adventure, often casting aside all notion of risk simply for the thrill of the reward. We tamed fire, electricity and gravity. As time went on, we acquired an ever-increasing taste for reckless abandon, hunting for new frontiers to explore and conquer. Space is the greatest of them all. Astronomers throughout history have worked tirelessly to theorize and prove that the Earth is but a small, small part of an unfathomably large Universe, packed to the brim with timeless, unknown potential for life. Well before the Information Age, scientists and astrologists used unproven methods and improvised scientific tools to figure out that the Earth, and all other planets in the Solar System, revolved around the Sun. This discovery alone pushed humanity to consider that we were not the center of the Universe and that perhaps, we were indeed just a very small part of it. And we are. In the centuries that have passed, humanity has proven time and time again that we are but a small existence in a much larger, ever-expanding entity of the grandest proportions. Our goal today remains as it has in the thousands of years previous: Ensure mankind’s survival, expansion and satisfaction. As World War 2 concluded, the United States rushed to amend the rift between Japan and countless countries across the globe. Knowing that Japanese ingenuity could shape the future of war, the US government immediately began plans for a program aimed at repairing its ties with the country under the premise of appealing to the many Japanese-American citizens already living there before the conflict. Program code-named JAUNT - Japanese-American Union for New Transportation - formed in 1946 and became the public face of powerful relations between the two countries’ top scientists. On the surface, JAUNT aimed at creating faster methods of travel between the two countries, ensuring steady immigration and cooperation between them. Behind the scenes, however, the program was one of many bringing once-opposing powers’ scientists to the US and the testing of new technology meant for war. In the 1950s, both the United States and Russia announced their plans to launch satellites into orbit, officially starting the Space Race. In 1957, JAUNT’s shadow-sector research division shifted their focus from developing advanced instruments of war to developing advances in space-flight technology. Much of the military’s funding went into this program as a means of getting the upper hand on the USSR and this led to the formation of NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration). Many of the secret members of JAUNT would prove useful for NASA. Russia successfully launched Sputnik-1 in October of 1957 and Sputnik-2 in November of the same year, 3 months ahead of the US. In February 1958, the US successfully launched Explorer 1 and joined their rival in the history books. This would begin the race for the first manned space mission. 1961 - A Russian Cosmonaut becomes the first man in space and the first man to orbit Earth. The US manages to successfully launch a suborbital mission but would not go on to complete a manned full-orbit until later that year, after Russia had multiple successes to boast. On the 25th of May, 1961, US President John F. Kennedy announces the Apollo missions and the ambitious Lunar Landing project, giving the Space Race a second wind. Through many successes and failures, the United States surpassed the USSR and completed steps toward further and more successful missions, eventually landing the crew of the Apollo 11 on the moon in July of 1969. Russia would not be able to match the achievement and officially ends the race in 1975 with a joint mission between the two nations. JAUNT dissolves as NASA takes over nearly all aeronautic responsibilities for the United States. Japan continues to provide technology and scientific research in accordance with the non-aggression treaties signed after World War 2. It was around this time that tensions began to reach their peak during the Cold War, causing NASA and the shadow-sector to once again shift the focus of their research toward war. Crises would appear across the world as the war snowballed toward it’s end in the early 1990s, only to give way to the Gulf War. It was here, during the Gulf War, that Japan decided to cede its resources, citing the United States' lack of interest in the well-being of their nation, and pull itself from the ground as a power of its own. Still allied with the US and other countries of the western bloc, it supported the war efforts, but in monetary and spiritual form only. Much of the personnel involved in the JAUNT program spread to other sectors and became even more elusive, all the while providing intelligence and technology to the new group formed during the war - the JFFE. Dubbed the Japanese Federation for Free Explorers, the group focused on extending Man’s reach to the stars, even as the world was at war. Focusing on the effort, the group remained in the shadows, utilizing resources from around the globe and funneling them into the most lucrative space program to date. In 2006, JAXA (Japanese Aerospace eXploration Agency) is formed as the public face of the JFFE to give light to some of the publicly-acceptable advancements the group has made. Plans for Earth’s first space station are announced, shocking the planet much as the original Space Race did decades before. In 2010, Mitsubishi announces the Regional Jet - an extremely advanced and expensive aircraft that would lead to a huge source of funding for the JFFE as corporations around the world vie for more and more power. 14 years later in 2020, NASA, RKA, JAXA and the JFFE successfully complete Earth’s first commercial International Orbital Station, renewing humanity’s interest in extraterrestrial exploration amid the Earth’s growing population and energy crises. The first shuttles would begin to ferry residents to the station later that year, utilizing technology mostly provided by the JFFE, which remains in the shadows. Less than a decade later, the Earth’s energy crisis reaches its summit, resulting in the forceful restriction of fossil fuels. This leads much of the world’s brightest minds to develop clean, renewable energy that can be reliably used for generations to come. 2040. World War 3. The most powerful nations of the world utilize their massive nuclear arsenals to wage countless battles over control of what resources are left. The carnage ultimately decimates the planet’s population and environment. Much of the technology developed by JFFE is re-purposed to suit the war effort, causing a rift within the organization that splits it into two groups. By 2050, the war has been abandoned. Thanks mostly in part to local insurrection fueled by splinter groups within the JFFE, most governments have toppled, their populations freed from the wartime oppression of military states. Damage to the Earth and population remain at an all-time high, and corporations offer their monetary support to help rebuild… By the mid 2060s, much of the rebuilding has been completed and most of the world is now controlled by massive multinational companies. The JFFE’s splinter groups maintain large contact networks throughout these corporations and continue to influence the direction of many leaders. In the following years, humans establish bases upon the Moon and Mars, eventually leading to the seeding of other planets, systems and the flourishing of humankind. The expansion does not come without its drawbacks, of course, as various conflicts befall humanity over the course of the next millennium. Large, multi-system-spanning political parties form and vie for territory. Scientists discover artifacts of unknown origin and go missing. Pioneers of the early days of colonization never return and their seed-ships are never to be seen again. Encounters with an advanced alien race called Thargoids rallies humankind once again to a singular cause, catapulting their technological innovation to even greater heights. The wars between the Thargoids and Humans carries on for centuries until by some miracle, humanity seems to drive them back into the far reaches of our galaxy. As seems to be the way of mankind, relations between the two opposing races reaches an amicable state and the two begin to share their technological and cultural differences. But the Thargoids draw back into the darkness of unknown space, with the last known Thargoid being seen in year 3258. 3300. Humanity has spread, but their nature has not changed.
