How to get more players in Open.

The number one question when it comes to Open should be: Why? If Open has no content that appeals to me, I naturally won't bother. It doesn't matter how good the rewards are, or how small the costs are, if I just don't enjoy it in the first place. But what IS the main benefit of Open? Why play there instead of playing in a private group or solo? Meeting new players. As far as I can tell, that's it in a nutshell. The ONLY reason to play in Open is to meet new people. If you want to play with friends, you're better off playing in PGs. If you just want to play the game, you're better off in solo. It's only when you want to meet new people that Open becomes at all appealing...but WHY do you want to meet new players? Gankers It's easy to explain with gankers; they don't care about long-term contact, they just want someone to blow up. This alone perfectly explains why gankers are the most common type of player people think of when they think of open. Gankers flourish because ganking is what the game makes easiest, simple as that. Multicrew I would say the next easiest thing to do with other players is actually Multicrew. Multicrew has a built-in matchmaking feature and allows players to telepresence into each other's ships, which makes it incredibly easy to use. Unfortunately, Multicrew is a very limited feature, for a few reasons. 1. Turrets suck. Unfortunately, in this game, Turrets do about half the damage of a fixed weapon, which means taking a weapon for a gunner to use means dramatically limiting your damage potential. If this game had ships that were less agile, this might be less of an issue, but practically, turrets are rarely ever worth bothering with, not the least reason being players are usually worse at shooting things than the turret default AI. 2. Fighters have a high cost. Fighters are actually very good for the most part, but they also have some serious downsides. Carrying a fighter bay for multicrew almost requires carrying an NPC for the times you can't get a crewmate, but NPC crew takes half your combat XP and a significant portion of your credits. This game is already quite grindy, so it's a tough sell to trade not only ~20% of your potential hull integrity AND 10% of your income. The goal should be to encourage players to multicrew, not to punish them for it! Normal Gameplay The hardest thing to do in this game is...just playing together. Let's envision a few scenarios. 1. I am in Shinrarta Dezhra, or a CG system. Another player is there. I cannot actually DO anything with them, because we both likely came from entirely different parts of the galaxy, so their presence is irrelevant unless I want to kill them. It's also very difficult to actually get their attention, because the chat feature is so poorly designed. When important player communication can be lost beneath inane NPC chatter, there is a problem. 2. I drop into a Conflict Zone and meet another player there. Best case scenario, even if we are both on the same team, there's good chance he's probably halfway through the CZ already, and I'll probably drop in too late to get the objective bonuses or many bonds. There is no way to tell if a CZ has players, what side those players have pledged, and so on, leaving players looking for other players to fly around randomly hoping they get lucky and meet an ally who isn't just going to leave, in a CZ that isn't 80% done. 3. I am out doing something else not combat-related. Say I'm trading. I stop at a station to buy a few tons of Bertrandite. There is another player there who just took a wing mission to deliver 5000 tons of Bauxite, but we both came from and are going towards different systems, so the chances we're both going to be doing the same thing at the same time is almost zero. Summary Basically, it's very hard to find good players to play with, and very easy to find bad players to play with. This makes playing in open frustrating, unless we are simply looking for the excitement of meeting a hostile player. Solutions Okay, those are the problems. How do we FIX it? Let's start with normal gameplay. The easiest and best way to make Open appealing is to make it easier to use. If I'm playing Open, I want to meet other players! Help me do that better! 1. Give us multiplayer data on instances we target from a distance, and give us a choice of which instance we drop into. For example, if I target a CZ from a distance, it should show me how many instances are active, how many players are in each instance, my connection speed to each instance, and which side players have pledged to inside each instance. That would allow me to quickly and effectively select the gameplay I want. And if I want to create a new instance entirely, I should be able to do that with a simple option, something that is particularly needed for large groups who want to play the same area over and over. 2. Make text chat easier and more convenient to use. NPC chatter should NEVER override player messages, and if a player in your instance is chatting, their messages should immediately and prominently be displayed unless you intentionally mute them. Muting options should be easily accessible, with options for different mute durations. Players should also be able to ping various info, like their present location or their current target, allowing others to quickly and efficiently cooperate. 3. Players should be able to publicly list wing missions for other players to offer to join. If I'm hauling 5000 tons of bertrandite to another system, I'll be there for a while. If another player comes through while I'm away, they should be able to see I've been there, and if they're interested, offer to join me. Anything to help cooperation work better. Multicrew 1. For multicrew, Turreted weapons should be reworked substantially. Most importantly, Turreted weapons should deal full fixed damage when in either their fixed weapon mode, or when they're under gunner control. To balance this, turrets should need to fully shut down and boot back up to swap between turreted and fixed modes. 2. Fighters should have their costs rebalanced. NPCs should not take any of your XP, and their price should be significantly reworked to be more enjoyable to newer players. An older player might not care about losing 10% or even 30% of their income, but a newer player will rightly hate it. Off the top of my head, what if newer players could supply their crew with a few tons of some rare good once every week, in lieu of their percentage? That creates entertaining gameplay and creates a reason for these rare goods to exist. I would also like there to be some smaller variants of fighter bays, for players who want to use them exclusively for multicrew. For example, a class 3 fighter bay that cannot be used with NPCs. Ganking I might be an outlier here, but I don't think Ganking should go away entirely. I personally think the existing tools already available to players, including blocking, already make this a relative non-issue. However, I do think the game should have a system-wide alert that tells players the hostility of the system they're in. Imagine if the current Powerplay 'HOSTILE' readout(which is essentially useless) were changed to instead show a threat level based on the number of players who have been ganked this week? This would be a great way to give some warning to the players who haven't played the game much, and could be a useful tool to help avoid ragequitting. Truly 'fixing' ganking would take a much more wholesale change that I don't think we're ready for just yet, but even little changes like this could really improve things for a lot of players. I think a few little changes like these could go a long ways towards making Open a more appealing experience for everyone, and I think that building good social contact is a key way to keep the game alive.
