I spend quite some time on these forums. But time after time i see the same questions asked, and i realize that we could need a thread for all these questions, so instead of creating tens of threads about it, people can just visit this one and get their answer straight away! If you want to add a FAQ to this list, or have any questions/discussion on the answers feel free to write it down below! Hello, I'm new to exploration, what should i know? Welcome commander! The galaxy is full of wonders, and exploration is a great way to see them! The Elite : Dangerous galaxy consists of 400 billion star systems, in a realistic milky-way galaxy! There is nebulae, black holes, distant suns, amazing sights, life and many other things to behold and discover in the galaxy! Just pick a ship, fit your fuel scoop and scanner(s) and go out on your life's greatest journey! What do i need to fit on my ship? For exploration you need these modules : - Fuel scoop (incredibly important) - A scanner (Preferably advanced discovery scanner) - A detailed surface scanner (Optional, but highly recommended) - AFMU (Optional) - Heat sinks (Highly recommended on long trips (10000Ly+)) - Patience and inspiration (See Erimus' videos) What are some good destinations to go to? It all depends on what kind of explorer you are. If you don't care about getting first discoveries I'd say you should go to nearby nebulae. If you do care, go to some distant place nobody has ever seen. When i started exploration i went on small trips to nearby nebulae to train myself up for long-range trips, after training for a few weeks i went for the absoloutley incredible and inspirational trip to the edge of the galaxy and to the nebulae at Dryuae Aip Gi-b D13-0 Everything is discovered! What should i do? Space near civilized space (That includes empire space despite it being uncivilized) is almost all scanned and mapped. Space near and in near nebulae (Up to 20000LY away) (Planetary nebulae excluded) is almost always claimed Real star systems are almost always claimed. If you're looking for unclaimed systems, just set out a random direction and go for a few thousand LY's. If you're looking for unclaimed nebulae, go to the core for unclaimed planetary nebulae, or go to the other sectors of the galaxy for unclaimed big nebulae. What are those transparent dots on the galaxy map? Nobody is exactly sure, but there is a few theories 1. They're gas clouds. Either from a star forming (Hence them often containing T-tauri stars and Herbigs) Or star dying and forming planetary nebulae (Hence the giants and supergiants) 2. They're placeholders (I like to believe the first one) What ship should i take? Depends. If you're looking for a good cheap exploration vessel I'd say the hauler or adder (Or diamondback explorer if you're rich-er) If you're looking for a pretty good exploration vessel for a couple of million cr it's the asp by all means. But! If you're a multi-millionaire desiring the absolutely best exploration vessel in the game, the anaconda is absoloutley fantastic! What is the best way to grind credits? GRINDING CREDITS?! WHAT KIND OF SCUM ARE YOU! EXPLORATION ISN'T ABOUT CREDITS OR RANK, EXPLORATION IS ABOUT DISCOVERY, PASSION AND EXPLORATION! (But if you really want to know ; The neutron fields in the core are perfect for scum like you) How do i find earth-likes? If you want to maximize your chances of finding earth-likes you should only jump to these stars ; G F K Those stars have very sol-like characteristics (G-class being the class the sun in fact is) and are much more likely to harbor life due to their large Goldilocks-zone To whom and where should i sell my data? If you want to get most value out of the data, you can grind yourself to rank 5 with the Sirius Corp (Will cost you 100 million cr) and get 300% value of your exploration data. (But of course you will sell all your data to our beloved Edmund Mahon)
