Hi Commanders, Here is a quick post, with a few hints and tips on how to get started. This is by no means the best or only way, but after a few hours I found it worked for me. First of all, - decide what you are going to do. In the first instance, this should really be "make credits". Don't bother fighting in a sidewinder, although you can, you are much better off getting some coin behind you then trading up for a decent ship to fit the purpose you need. . So, how to get the cash. First, make your way to somewhere like Aulin, depending on your starting point. Trade in your sidewinder for a Hauler. This should cost you somewhere around 55,000 cr. If you are not going to fight, don't bother wasting weight on carrying a laser. rip it out, all weight saved will add to your jump range. Rip out the cargo bays and replace them with 2 x 8Ton Cargo bays. Upgrade your jump drive to as much as possible. I managed to do this and end up with around 3000 credits left from my original 100k. I also had a jump range of around 12ly (10 laden). How much cash you have left, is not really important. I tried trading coffee, and medicines, but for the time I put in, the return was not really worth it. You may need to do this however; to make a small profit, and get the first rating of "Mostly Penniless" for what comes next. . Once you have made "Mostly Penniless" check the Bulletin Board, and look for any missions with a Skull, and a cargo canister. You may not be able to get all of them, however there should be some available to you at this rank. These missions are generally illegal, and therefore pay over the odds. Typically they are trading slaves, or trading narcotics. They generally offer a reward somewhere between 30,000 and 120,000 credits per run. You do not need to buy the cargo, you just need enough cargo space to make the run, and deliver the goods (Hence the hauler, and the 2x8 cargo bays) . If you get interdicted on the way there are 2 options. Which one you decide is up to you. The first option is to close your throttle and submit to the interdiction. While this might seem like a strange tactic, the benefit of doing means that your FSD has a much faster cool down cycle, and you can jump back to super cruise much faster, saving valuable seconds. The second option is to outfly the interdiction. To do this, you need to keep the nose of your ship aligned with the blue circle, until the blue bar on the left is maxed out, and the red bar on the right has disappeared. At this point the interdiction will be over, and you can continue in super cruise. . If you fail to outfly, or if you chose option 1, then you will find yourself pulled from super cruise, and most likely under attack. Generally you will be interdicted either by NPC pirates, or federal forces, intent on scanning you, which is not entirely desirable when you are ferrying contraband goods. (Not sure if you can be interdicted yet on the Xbox by other players, but you can on PC, so it’s likely to come at some point) The key here, is “Run, - Definitely Run” :D When you drop you will have a few seconds before you start getting attacked. Set 4 pips on the engines, then max throttle, and boost away from the enemy. At the earliest opportunity spool up the FSD and get back to super cruise. You can do this when a) you have enough distance between you and your pursuer, and b) as soon as your FSD has cooled. In this case you can see why submitting to interdiction, if you feel you cannot outfly, can buy you valuable seconds in FSD cool down. . Once back to super cruise, head to your destination, and claim your hard earned rewards. Small outposts are better than large stations, as they tend not to have the federal security ships “sniffing around” and scanning docking ships. Don’t panic too much if you do get scanned though, as its generally a fine and they don’t attack you when docking (well they haven’t so far anyway) Rinse and repeat, and you should make a couple of mil, in a few days. Once you have around 3 mil credits, and then go buy a cobra. Keep your hauler stashed away, just in case you fall on hard times, and need to run some shady business again, to turn a coin. . Kit out your Cobra with improved lasers of your choice. Do not underestimate pulse lasers. Beams look cool, and pack a punch but drain a lot of power. Check out an upgraded power distribution system if you go that route. 2 x gimballed class 2 pulse lasers and a missile rack or 2 can do a lot of damage. The cobra also allows you to have something like 35 tons of cargo, so it’s a good all round ship for finding your feet. A few other pointers that you may have missed. The throttle indicator turns blue at a certain range. This is the “Autospeed” setting. If you set your throttle to the blue range ( the indicator will turn blue,) after selecting a destination, the ship will manage its own speed, and decelerate to the correct speed for dropping safely, within the 1Mm range. This helps stop overshooting your destination, or having to keep adjusting your speed on the way. Player ships are hollow squares, or triangles, whereas NPC’s are solid on the radar. Putting up your landing gear as soon as you leave the pad allows your speed to increase, and allows you to leave the mass locked area, and system jump as soon as possible The blue dot inside the direction indicator not only points to your star sytem, or docking station. When inside the station it seems to point to your assigned landing pad. This is useful if you become disoriented inside the station, and cannot see your landing pad. . That should hopefully get you started, and up to your first Cobra. What you do after that, is entirely up to you :D Fly safe,
